# 1.2 Defining Provenance: The Asset Fingerprint

We define this protocol as the **Asset Fingerprint** of the Ethereum ecosystem. Unlike traditional metadata, which floats precariously in off-chain silos, the Provenance Fingerprint is embedded directly into the deep state of the blockchain.

It is an infrastructure that grants assets a "self-aware" capacity to distinguish themselves from forgeries. By anchoring the identity of the creator to the specific cryptographic hash of the asset at the moment of inception, we create an inseparable bond. This is not a label applied to an asset; it is the asset’s digital DNA, recognized by every node in the network as the sole arbiter of truth.
